2015 was a huge year for the gaming community. It saw the true rise of huge open world experiences that deliver fantastic experiences, while also giving us smaller experiences worth even the most hardcore gamer's attention. We got some wonderful games this year along with a few stinkers and this article is going to cover all of it. Before we begin I want to let everyone know that I did not play every game that was released this year, so if your favorite game does not get a nod, it's because I just did not play it. Three huge games I did not get to this year were Dying Light, Metal Gear Solid V, and most recently Just Cause 3. I also only own a PS4 and X-Box One, so PC exclusives will not be relevant to this article .
Let's get some disappointments out of the way. There were many games that were broken upon release or had some issues, while others were just a complete letdown. These are my 3 most disappointing games of 2015.
3. Evolve – Yes, Evolve came out early on in 2015 and was a hugely anticipated game that wanted to focus on cooperative play. It was very limited in modes, guns, characters, and maps. Which made it easy put down the controller and move to the next game. I lost all interest in about a week and so did the rest of the world. It will be interesting to see what the developer will do with an inevitable sequel.
2. Batman: Arkham Knight – The fourth and 'final' entry in Rocksteady's superb action / adventure series was a fun time in small doses, but extremely failed at bringing Batman to the new generation in a way that blew expectations. It seemed like the game was the first three all put together with better graphics and a lousy attempt at adding the batmobile. While the game is certainly not bad, it left a bunch to be desired.
1. The Order 1886 – One of the most anticipated PlayStation 4 games that was announced a couple years ago released with a whimper. The third person shooter period piece ended up being the best looking game of the year that you barely played. The four hour experience was more of a cutscene with gameplay scattered in than the other way around.
Now let's get to the best games of the year!
10. Rocket League – This is a small game that came out of now and I sunk unexpecting hours into it. It's a fun game to sit down and play in long sessions or in quick burst. It was a pleasure to play and is still fantastic a few months down the line.
9. Madden 16 – Okay, so this is the guilty pleasure game in a sense. I love football and I love Madden. I play the franchise every single year and put in hundreds of hours into it. It was another step above it's predecessor and puts building blocks for the next installation.
8. Halo 5 – The first Halo on the new X-Box delivers a great experience with a fun single player and very competitive multiplayer. While the actual story line is a bit underwhelming, the gameplay is second to none. Multiplayer is still going strong and I find myself returning every few days to play a few matches.
7. Star Wars Battlefront – While I was a little disappointed with the casualness of the game and lack of content, Battlefront is an absolute joy to play. It's one of the best looking games I've ever seen and lays the ground for a better sequel.
6. Rainbow Six: Siege – Siege wave me my serious multiplayer itch that was not fulfilled by the mediocre Battlefield Hardline. It's very tactical and plays terrifically each match. It truly takes understanding the game to be good at it and I can not love that enough.
5. Until Dawn – Maybe the biggest surprise of the year, Sony did not even know what they had with this game. It's a beautiful looking game that plays like your run of the mill teen horror story, but with a great twist mid way through. The decisions you make actually affect the game, REALLY.
4. Rise of the Tomb Raider – This sequel improves on the Tomb Raider reboot in every way and is just a breath of fresh air to play a somewhat linear story driven experience. Although I wish the story was a bit better, it's a fun game nonetheless.
3. Fallout 4 – The fourth entry in this huge franchise did not exist until about six months ago when it was suddenly announced and then released this November. It's a great game that is more of the same. Even though it looses it's steam about thirty hours into it, it's a hell of an experience that should be on everyone's shelf.
2. The Witcher 3 – The Wild Hunt is an amazing game that does a bunch of things to varying degrees of success. The combat and movement would be my biggest gripe of the game, but it's so easy to overlook when you have this colossal game with endless possibilities.
1. Bloodborne – Not only is Bloodborne my game of the year, it's also my biggest surprise of the year. While I have played the souls games, I never really got into them, but Bloodborne completely captivated me. While it's story makes work for it and it absolutely not relevant, it's the gameplay that kept me coming back to the game. I could not stop thinking and playing this game. It's the perfect challenge and if your open to different kinds of games, I would 100% recommend picking up Bloodborne.
