Leaders come into their places of leadership in a variety of ways. Some leaders are made, shaped from a young age to excel in specific areas; others are birthed by an experience or great tragedy, while others walk into their destiny. In reality there are three key ways to find the right place to most flourish.

1) Find your place through social, cultural, economic or religious affiliations.

Every leader has a specific group or type of people which they would be most effective leading. A leader who shares common affiliations with their potential constituency can help make an effective match of leader and follower. Examples of these would be a leader based on shared social, cultural, economic or religious affiliations. To lead a group for Christian rights, the leader would have to be a Christian as defined by the followers. Sharing in common unifying issues will help to ensure passionate, real understanding of the matters of importance.

2) Find your place by geographic location.

Similar to certain fruits being able to grow to perfection in the right climate and geographical location, the same could be said of leaders. Some people become stars and legends in their small town, yet go unknown and are just another face in the crowd in another location. This is a familiar reality learned by young people from small towns who set out to become models and head for LA. In their town they might have won every beauty contest and were constantly praised for their good looks. Yet when in LA, specifically Hollywood in a town full of beautiful people they become average. There is a geographical location where you will find great success. For someone people, the location is another country on the other side of the global. An example of this was before the WNBA was formed many of the top female basketball players played in foreign leagues were they found success and recognition, because they were not a recognized professional league in America.

3) Find your place by relocating boundaries.

There are issues so great, such as poverty, health, economics, war that transcends physical, cultural or religious boundaries and provide opportunities for a unique kind of leader. A leader that thinks beyond themselves, their limitations and their bias will most suit and be natural at combating larger issues. These leaders take on a global, dynamic and timeless perspective that is able to reach and incorporate people who may have diverging perspectives on solutions. These leaders are able to lead without the movement becoming about them, they are able to almost convey a spiritual, deeper sense of the issue. These leaders appear to be lead by nothing else but a complete commitment to the resolution of the issue about they are leading. When we examine issues such as the health epidemic of AIDS that has transcends all boundaries of race, class, culture we find that these issues need a leader who can carefully and sincerely include everyone, while having a clear defined mission. When an issue possesses great impact, depth and breath it will define its leaders rather than the leader define it. There are issues no one could have predicted and by the time we graves the magnitude of it precious time has been wasted. In these cases a leader is defined and emerges out of the chaos and panic usually due in part to their calm, clear directive and unique insights.

We come into leadership from different paths, however you come into your position of leadership strive to become a leader that is consistent, progressive and can transcend barriers in order to accomplish unique goals. Find your fit, your location, your uniqueness and get moving forward.
