Learning institutions within Australia have the right to determine specific policies regarding both girls 'and boys' school uniforms. This is provided for under the Education Act 1972.

In this regard, schools have the option of determining either a defined school uniform or simply instituting a particular dress code (a less stringent requirement on color and style of clothing items). Moreover, such uniform or dress code can either be applicable to all or a specific group of students.

If your school has instituted a school uniform policy, here's what you can expect:

1. Boys School Uniforms

You're much more likely to find uniform policies in secondary, rather than primary schools. Such policies also tend to be more stringent within private learning institutions, especially catholic schools.

All students are normally required to comply with the existing policies regarding acceptable garments within learning institutions. Such policies would also have appropriate correctional methods, which would apply in case any student does not complain. However, you should not worry too much about accidentally contravening such polices, since they are quite simple and easy to understand.

(i) Shorts / Trousers

Younger boys typically have the option between shorts and trousers. Such an option would last until they get to approximately 13 years of age, when they would be required to wear trousers. However, even at this age, the trouser-wearing rule remains quite flexible, since exceptions are made during the warm months.

Students at secondary level typically have white shirts, complemented with dark-colored pants. This is an interesting variation from the typical dark-colored tops worn by students at primary level.

(ii) Ties And Blazers

Ties and blazers serve a much more humble role than simply giving a professional look and keeping students warm. Many learning institutions take advantage of these items to showcase the brand colors of the school and even display the school's emblem.

However, schools are not too vain that they would sacrifice students' comfort just to market themselves a bit more. Thankfully, you can do away with the blazer and tie during summer.

(iii) Sports Wear

As long as there's physical education in the schools' curriculum, you're bound to have specific policies regarding sportswear. During the summer, most schools typically feature a simple combination of a short and t-shirt. This changes to a warmer attire during winter, consisting of tracksuits jackets and long track pants.

Since each sport usually has special attire, your school may require additional items to be worn during team sports.

(iv) Accessories

Unfortunately, many school uniform polices have little room for accessories. If you really love wearing hats and fancy hair styles, you've got to limit that to only home use.

Actually, your hairstyle is a particularly critical aspect. If you happen to shave in an unacceptable manner, you just might have to spend a bit of time on suspension, until your hair grows back.

(v) Shoes

Whatever you wear must absolutely conform to the laid down rules: from the tie, down to the shoes. Most policies require either black or brown lace up shoes.

Normally, you would also have socks that bear particular colors depicting the school's brand.
