You may hear the word ‘retreat’ and think that it’s a bit antiquated or of a bygone era, and ditto for the notion of a mountain retreat. The idea of a retreat is one where you separate yourself from the world around you, surround yourself with the simpler things, and connect with yourself again. It’s a nice thought, but for a number of people, the ability to just get up and head out to find one’s self just isn’t in the card. That is, of course, if you decide that your next vacation could be prime-time for a retreat.
More importantly, let’s factor the idea of a mountain retreat into the equation. Mountain activities certainly mean something different to different people, but what exactly comes with a mountain retreat? Well, in reality, you’re taking the same notions of a retreat and using the mountains as a backdrop. Moreover, you’re taking time away from the hustle of the big city and finding refuge in a smaller mountain town so that you can metaphorically recharge your batteries.
There are some of you out there that might still be a little unsure about the idea of using your next vacation, one of the more heralded times of the year in life, for a mountain retreat. You figure that the purpose of a vacation is to have everything you could need at your fingertips whenever you want it. Sounds great, right? Well, technically, you have this all the time. How easily can you order food & home goods right to your front door? How easily can you look up information on any topic ever? You have all that you could want always around you, but you still need the vacation. Maybe it’s time to rethink what a vacation might be all about.
If you decide to take the plunge & go forth on a mountain retreat, you need to be sure to involve yourself in the following activities:
Winter Sports Galore – Try your hand at skiing, and see what “hitting the slopes” is all about. Better yet, get really adventurous and go snowboarding.
Hiking and Biking – Become one with the terrain by getting right up against it either by foot or by bike. Make your hiking boots earn their name.
Fishing – Beautiful, crisp mountain waters offer you a chance to fish in pristine areas free from the clutter of life. Even if you don’t catch a thing, you’ll look around & realize that it doesn’t get much better than that.
Seasonal Celebrations – Mountain towns are friendly places, so mingle with the locals & take part in their celebrations & traditions.
Local Festivals and Area Gatherings – Even if you think you’re away from everything, you might just be in the right place to take in some cool gatherings you won’t find anywhere else. Heck, you might be an enthusiast of some kind & find a festival that celebrates that one thing.
A mountain retreat is a great way to get back to the simpler life. Far too often, we find ourselves treading water, barely able to keep our heads above the surface with all that we have to do, deadlines to meet, and finances to navigate. Even if you don’t head off into the mountains, finding the time to just breathe is important for your health and well-being. Then again, breathing while snowboarding is totally awesome!
