It can be frustrating to shop for bedroom furniture, but it does not have to be. Finding pieces that fit your style and decor – as well as your space requirements – can be a lot easier than you think if you do a little planning before making the rounds of your local retailers.
Smaller Homes
If you're trying to find bedroom furniture for a small area, you'll obviously need to take some measurements before you go shopping. This is particularly important when it comes to beds with headboards and footboards, with will probably add about four inches to the length. You may want to think about skipping the footboard entirely, however, because it may make the area look even smaller than it is.
When shopping for mattresses, keep in mind that they can vary broadly in size. For example, a double (or full) mattress will be 54 X 75 inches, while a king will usually be about 76 X 80 inches. Measure carefully before you go shopping, because you do not want to risk falling in love with a mattress set only to find that it will not fit once it's delivered to your home.
Storage
If you're buying new bedroom furniture, you'll need substantial storage space as well. If you do not have a lot of closet space, find the largest chest or drawers or dresser that will fit so you'll have plenty of room for smaller items such as shorts, T-shirts, undergarments, socks and others. You may also want to consider purchasing an armoire with a hanging bar and also buy some shelves. As a matter of fact, many people prefer husbands because they can see what they're looking for a lot easier than rummaging through a lot of clothing.
Nightstands
A nightstand is very convenient for holding alarm clocks, lamps, tissues, telephones, and radios. Make sure yours is about 27-33 inches high and has at least one drawer to provide additional storage. It should, of course, match the rest of the room's decor.
Quality
No matter what type of bedroom furniture you're considering, look into how well it is made before you make a commitment. All of the surfaces should be smooth, drawers should easily open and close, and the insides of the drawers should be smooth to the touch as well. Make sure the drawers are made squarely and that the bottom of one one fits squarely into a groove. If you purchase something of lesser quality, it may have drawers with sides that are glued or nailed on. In addition, humidity and temperature changes can cause poorly made drawers to swell and their joints to loosen.
Have as detailed a plan in place as possible before you do your shopping. If you do, you'll have a much better chance of finding items that will not only fit your style and space, but will also be durable.
