The southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen is a large settlement located in the province of Fujian, which became famous several decades ago for opening its borders as a Special Economic Zone. Since then, the city has only grown stronger, welcoming more tourists every year. In addition to this, Xiamen is currently the second most livable city in the Peoples Republic of China.
Even the airport, which stands a few kilometers outside the city center, has grown in size and importance. It is now an international facility, and processes millions of travelers each year. Once in the city, the most convenient way to get around is by taxis, as they are not only fast, but also reasonably cheap compared to western standards.
Hotels in Xiamen City Center are in abundance, especially around the main attractions listed below. The best 10 attractions of the downtown area include:
1. World Trade Mall – this is considered as the largest and most important shopping center in Xiamen. Visitors can find plenty of western and traditional Xiamen cuisine, cinemas, entertainment levels, hundreds of retail stores and a comfortable and cool environment all under the one roof!
2. Culture Gallery – come and see jade at its finest in the Xiamen Shinegood Culture Gallery. There are literally many hundreds of ancient jade products found throughout the gallery. It is certainly a splendid place for those tourists interested in ancient history and Chinese jewelry.
3. Zhongshan Road – this pedestrian strip is a wonderful area that is renamed for its shopping, food, and continuous redevelopments. Visitors will see a remarkable mix between the buildings of old and the structures of modernity while strolling through the pedestrian street.
4. Bailuzhou Park – this is hands down the most impressive and enthralling attraction in the city center of Xiamen. Even though the park is filled with people during daylight hours, the best time to visit the park is at night. A festival atmosphere can sometimes be seen and experienced, complete with dancing, music and a large amount of food.
5. Night Markets – are you keen on witnessing traditional Xiamen culture at its finest? Simply head to the night markets in the city center and tourists will have a superb time while there.
6. Xiamen University – yes, universities are not usually tourist attractions in other cities. However, the local university in Xiamen is quite phenomenal to witness. There are plenty of traditional structures that have stood the test of time, and continue to impress tourists. The parklands and gardens around the university are also spectacular.
7. Jiageng Park – not renamed when compared to some of the other parks in the city, Jiageng Park is still a fabulous place to stroll through. It was built to commemorate the founder of the Xiamen University, Chen Jiageng.
8. Nanputuo Temple – even though Buddhism is not overly important within China, the city of Xiamen boasts an excellent temple within the city. It is situated just a short distance from the heart of Xiamen, and offers unparallel views of the city and its surrounding area, especially on a clear spring day.
9. Music Square – this boardwalk park is a famous location for families and couples to discover on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Many of the most famous composers and musicians throughout the region's history have a sculpture in the park, hence the name – Music Park.
10. Water Garden Expo Park – this stunning park is a great place to explore for a couple of hours in the afternoon or mornings. It contains several expo islands, and an exciting central building called China Education Park, which stands in the heart of the parkland.
