The Santa Fe school shooting that claimed the lives of nine students and one teacher continue to supplement the streak of school shootings in the United States. The fatal massre of students in schools persists even with the increased deployment of school resource officers (SROs). In 2018 alone, America has lost more than 40 students to school shootings, and politicians continue to serve their messages of condolences to parents suffering in agony for the loss of their loved ones. A credible and realistic solution to this problem does not seem forthcoming in the near future.

Even in the midst of this confusion, we must attempt to at least speculate about some of the things that are helping the increasing incidences of school shootings, and I can not help but wonder if the second adjustment has anything to do with it. The US Constitution grants American citizens the right to bear firearms for their protection. While this may have seemed a noble move to protect the American citizens at the time of absorption, the cost of it is becoming too weighty, claiming the lives of young and innocent Americans. Incidences of gun violence are on the rise in the United States, and the solution to the problem might just be embedded in the litigation process.

Although the second amendment only permits the issue of guns to adults, some of those adults do not seem to handle the guns in the proper manner. Some of the children involved in school shootings have been reported to use their parents' guns to commit the massacre. This, in turn, raises a significant question of just how careful are the parents in handling their guns? Why are children having access to these guns? The American gun culture is highly unregulated, and until it is regulated, we should expect more incidences like the Santa Fe shootings.

Interestingly, most of the policemen and leaders in the United States still believe that the solution to gun violence is putting more guns in the streets. Texas governor Abbot, following the Santa Fe shooting, suggested that teachers should have armed and equipped to respond to such cases of school shootings. The main question that I ask myself is if the deployment of SROs, who have been trained for years, have not solved the problem, how would arming the teachers help? Some politicians have also proposed increasing background checks, and I am still worried that this is not a solution enough.

The only feasible way to solve the problem of school shootings and gun violence in the US is simply to get the guns out of the streets. Let the police do the job that they have been employed to do; to provide security to the American people. The black market in the US is full to guns, and until the federal government makes a move to remove those guns from the market, through a possible amendment of the constitution, incidences of gun violence might just continue to occur, and this will claim many young and innocent lives.
