Of all the metals man has given value to and prized over the centuries, it is silver that is one of the most valuable and one of the most practical. This combination of versatility and beauty has made silver products some of the most prized possessions in the collections of many illustrious owners. And naturally, as is the case when many things that are beautiful and valuable, a lot of people go to great lengths to obtain them and maintain their beauty.
But silver, no matter how pure they may initially be when they get added to your collection, can and does get tarnished. Many chemical reactions occur between silver and substances that have sulfur. When silver and sulfur combine, it forms a compound called silver sulfide. And this is most probably the source of the tarnish in your silver.
So what can you do to avoid getting that annoying tarnish on your silver? Here are a few things you can try:
– Keep rubber away from your silver: Rubber contains a lot of sulfur and if you took notice of the effect sulfur can have on silver, you’d do well to keep your silver away from any rubber bands, silverware holders, placemats and dishmats that may happen to be lying around your house.
– Food, food, food: As much as silverware is one of the grander things that can be used for eating in high society, prolonged exposure to food can cause your silver to corrode. Mustard, mayonnaise and egg are the most usual culprits.
– Not being used enough: On the other end of the spectrum, not using your silverware enough can also lead to corrosion. So use it as regularly as you can, while observing the proper ways of taking care of silver products.
