Hi there, you must have heard about the Chinese Valentine’s Day. It is on July 7th of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar! But do you know the details of this touching love story between Niulang and Zhinv? Loving this fairy tale so much, I have to make a brief introduction to you, which you won’t regret reading.
Once upon a time, there was an orphan called Niulang, who was treated badly by his sister-in-law after his parents died. One day she asked him to graze 9 cows and insisted there were 10 cows in total. In despair, he found a sick old ox and took it home together with the 9 cows to avoid being driven out of the house. Niulang took a good care of this ox for a long time and one day the cattle told him suddenly that it was the Taurus celestial from heaven.
Later, under the guidance of the Taurus celestial ( the ox ), Niulang picked up the clothes of a fairy in the fairies bathing place. The name of the fairy is Zhinv, then they fell in love. Happily, Zhinv gave birth to a pair of twins for Niulang and they devoted to each other so much.
However, the happiness could not last for a long time. It was a strict rule that celestial beings could not fall in love with ordinary people. When the Queen Mother of the West found out what happened between Zhinv and Niulang, she became so mad and took Zhinv back to heaven. Then the couple drown in sorrow for every minute. Unluckily, the ox died too, but it told Niulang that he could make a pair of shoes of its skin, then he could fly to the heaven to see Zhinv. Niulang did as what the ox told and when he almost arrived heaven, the Queen Mother of the West drew a silver river with her silver hairpin. So Niulang was stopped by the silver river sadly.
Miraculously, the magpies were moved by their love and made a “magpie bridge” enabled Niulang to pass through the silver river to see Zhinv. The Queen Mother of the West was moved by the scene finally and allow the couple to meet one time per year. The reunion day would be July 7th in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. Since then, every year when this day is coming, Niulang would take their twins bu carrying pole to see Zhinv. One day is so short, but they can talk and laugh so happily at this day. People were moved deeply by the story and named their reunion day Chinese Valentine’s Day.
